Raymond Waddey

Raymond Waddey was born April 25, 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee. As a child he loved attending air shows, watching airplanes at the airport, and building many model airplanes. While a high school student at Central High School, Ray studied aviation history, played on the football team and ran track, achieving letters in both sports.

After high school graduation in 1957, Ray joined the United States Air Force hoping to become an Air Force artist. Without formal training this dream did not occur.

In 1980, after seeing a poorly designed magazine cover, Ray decided he could paint a more interesting and exciting aircraft picture. He also started his tradition of requesting the pilots who actually flew the aircraft depicted in each of his paintings to personally autograph them. His artistic career was born.

Over the years many of Ray’s paintings have been reproduced into prints, lithographs and book covers. His pride and joy is an original painting of Neil Armstrong which is personally signed by the famed astronaut himself. This is very special to him because Mr. Armstrong’s signature is very difficult to find on anything let alone an original painting.

Throughout his career, Ray has had the privilege and honor of working with many famous pilots such as: Jimmy Doolittle, Chuck Yeager, Bud Anderson, Raymond Tolliver, Gunther Rall, Robin Olds, Robert Morgan (pilot of the “Memphis Belle”) and Raymond Brooks (World War I and flying ace).

"ACEDOM - The Hard Way" Limited Edition Print by Ray Waddey

Commemorates the 5th victory of WWII P-47 ace Lt. Robert S Johnson over Munster, Germany.

On October 10th, 1943, Lt. Robert S. Johnson, 61st Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group , while supporting heavy bomber withdrawal from a raid in Munster, Germany, scored his fifth victory in a most unusual manner. After sighting a Fw-190 below him, Lt. Johnson put his Thunderbolt into a long 90 degree vertical dive pushing it into an outside loop as he opened fire. From an inverted position, he shattered the 190 with a 90 degree deflection shot sending it down in flames.

18-1/2" by 23-1/2" Image Size, 24" by 26-1/2" Sheet Size Limited Edition Print, Edition of 500, signed by the artist and co-signed by Lt. Robert S. Johnson - $50

18-1/2" by 23-1/2" Image Size, 24" by 26-1/2" Sheet Size Artist Proof, Edition of 140, signed by the artist and co-signed by Lt. Robert S. Johnson - $75

All Limited Edition prints are signed and numbered (S/N) by the artist. Limited Edition prints are restricted to a certain number. For example, if 400 prints are made from an original painting, once they’re gone, that’s it. There is no limit to the number of open edition prints of a particular painting. That’s why Limited Edition prints are more expensive — and more valuable to collectors — than "open" edition. Rare objects are more valuable.

An Artist’s Proof (AP), generally, is the first 5% - 10% of the Limited Edition prints that come off the press. This status is noted on the print. Collectors prefer APs because their value increases even more than a Limited Edition as time goes by.

All artwork is subject to availability at time of order. Although seller strives to remain currrent as to inventory, seller reserves the right to cancel a sale if item is no longer available at time of purchase.
