"BIG HOG Above Bagana" - Joseph Szady - F4U Corsair VF-17 Jolly Rogers Art

In Stock 3
VF-17 became operational on January 1, 1943 as Tom Blackburn assumed command of the first “Jolly Rogers” squadron. In only 76 days of combat, VF-17’s 154 1/2 victories set the standard for Naval fighter operations that fews have matched. On November 1, 1943, 18 Vals escorted by 12 Zeros fly towards our invasion forces landing at Empress Augusta Bay on Bougainville. Eight Corsairs from VF-17 intercept and the Japanese attack breaks up. Above an eerily smoldering Mt. Bagana, Cdr. Tom Blackburn dives out of the early morning sun and blasts a Zero out of the sky, then flies through the fireball for his first of eleven victories: “What a sensation!”.

Joseph Szady

Growing up in a small Massachusetts town in the 50's Joseph spent many hours watching F-86 Sabres climb into the sky from Westover Field, near his father's home town outside of Springfield. "I can still hear the loud roar; those memories give me goose-bumps". Leaving his New England home, Joseph attended the University of Notre Dame, where he participated in football, boxing, and rugby before graduating with a BA in liberal arts in 1973. He later attended Ray-Boge School of Art, where he received the Illustrator's Award in both 1977 and 1978, before graduating in 1978. Joseph has been a member of the prestigious American society of Aviation Artists since his inspirational meeting with ASAA founder, Keith Ferris, at Keith's New Jersey home in 1990.

His love of military aviation led to many defense related assignments. His clients include: the U.S. Navy, General Electric, and the Harris Corporation. Various aviation commissions are now hanging in private collections across the United States and three of Joseph's paintings hang permanently at the Officer's Club on Kirtland, AFB in Albuquerque. "CAG Cat Sunset" has been on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, and Joseph has had several paintings on display at other museums and airports.

This 31" by 23" print, limited to 1500, is signed by the artist and personally autographed by Capt. Tom Blackburn and seven other original VF-17 pilots.

All Limited Edition prints are signed and numbered (S/N) by the artist. Limited Edition prints are restricted to a certain number. For example, if 400 prints are made from an original painting, once they’re gone, that’s it. There is no limit to the number of open edition prints of a particular painting. That’s why Limited Edition prints are more expensive — and more valuable to collectors — than "open" edition. Rare objects are more valuable.

All Limited Edition artwork is subject to availability at time of order. Although seller strives to remain currrent as to inventory, seller reserves the right to cancel a sale if item is no longer available at time of purchase.
