The Stilwell Road

Narrated by Ronald Reagan, The Stilwell Road tells of the land bridge to Burma "scratched out of the mountains with fingernails" at the cost of countless Chinese lives, so their blockaded country could fight on. One month after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese destroyed it, but men fought and died to rebuild it so caravans of guns, fuel, ammmunition and food could make it through, keeping China alive in its struggle against Japan. Rolling back the enemy advances in the Pacific, the Allies came within striking distance of Japan, and in the Battle of Saipan, we invaded our first objective in the Marianas Islands - their administrative center - in 1944. Then it was on to Guam, the largest of the Marianas and still a vital guardian of Japan's sea lanes in the summer of '44; the first American possession to fall to Japan, it was now the next on our schedule of attack.
